Sally Jo Denton

Sally Jo Denton, 84, of Clayton passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022 at her home, with her family at her side. Sally Jo (Long) Jackson Denton was born on July 22, 1937 in Clayton, Oklahoma to James Edward Long and Helen June (Vantine) Long. She grew up on the family farm attending grade school at Nine Pines one room school house. She then attended Clayton High School graduating 1955 Class Valedictorian. She worked at Lawson's Drug Store drawing sodas and dipping ice cream. She enjoyed waitressing and visiting with her customers at Blair's Cafe. Sally married her high school sweetheart, Meredith Jackson (He stole her heart with his yo-yo tricks) on May 24, 1955. She began her career as postal clerk at the Clayton Post Office in August 1957. She received numerous awards for notable performance and superior achievement. She retired August 1987 after 30 years of dedication to the U.S. Postal Service. Sally and Meredith also owned and operated Jackson's Grocery Store for a number of years. After the passing of Meredith, her husband of 37 years, Sally was blessed to have met and married a long time friend, Junior Edward Denton on Good Friday, April 10,1998. It was a good day for all of us and the 23 wonderful years they shared holding hands together. Sally was a lifelong member of Clayton First Baptist Church where she was a dedicated serving member. She was an excellent Seamstress sewing for her family and friends. She also love to crochet gifts for her family. Sally was very athletic and enjoyed her morning walks and exercise with beloved friends and family. She was an avid gardener growing prize tomatoes and beautiful flowers. Sally loved to swim she made daily trips to Peale Creek making sure her children and grandchildren learned to swim. Sally is survived by her daughters Portia Wickware (Chris) of McAlester, Ok., Cheryl Burleson (Rocky) of Clayton,OK., Barbara McCaughan (Mark) of Palmer Tx., Kelley Davis (James) of The Colony,Tx., Regina Denton of Clayton, Ok., and Paula Hurst (Danny) of Oklahoma City, Ok.; Grandchildren: Tramera Fletcher (Dennis), Talisha Blankenship (D.J.), Trey Strange (Courtney), Nate Wickware, Talena Womack, Keaton Womack, Cody Denton, Adrienne McCaughan, Sean McCaughan, Deidre Jones (Tyne), Danielle Cardone (Tony), Jefferey Carroll (Alaina), Jacob Carroll (Ashley), Brittany Carroll, Dakota Sherrill, and April Roberts (Jason); Great Grandchildren: Graylen, Whitt, Draighton, Madeleine, Midland, Laney, Scarlet, Alexa, Kaden, Racey, Meredith, Ashton, Jayda, Mirayah, Jace, Lucas, Adele,Hendrix, Henley,Brandon, Richard, Lucas, Alyssa, Paris, Gabrielle, Chloe, Verity, and Leighton, as well as many nieces and nephews that she loved very much. Three very special caregivers Regina Denton, Tena Boatright and Lucinda Gooch who became family. Sally was preceded in death by her parents James Edward and Helen (Vantine) Long; her husbands: Meredith Jackson and Junior Edward Denton; three sisters: Mable, Jewel, and Betty Jane; six brothers: Bill, Teddy Jack, Richard, John, Jim, and David; one step brother: Albert Pallbearers will be Trey Strange, Keaton Womack, Graylen Fletcher, Whitt Fletcher, Draighton Fletcher, and Kaden Womack. Honorary Pallbearers will be Byron Bohanon, Bueford Lockhart, Jerry Wood, Richard Long, John (AKA Jon Jon) Long, Jimmy Long, John Long, Randy King, Cody Long, Toney Long, Billy Glenn, Dale Jackson, Justin Jackson, and David Ralston Our family also wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to Heartland Hospice for their considerate and compassionate care of our mother. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 28th, 2022 from 2:00PM to 6:00PM at McCarn Funeral Chapel in Clayton, Oklahoma. Services will on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 at 3:00PM at First Baptist Church in Clayton, Oklahoma with Bro. Jonathan Reichman, Bro. John Long, and Bro. James Easley officiating. Interment will follow at Old City Cemetery in Clayton, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to McCarn Funeral Service of Talihina, Oklahoma.
