Mary June Smith

Mary June Smith was born to Buster and Lucille Chaney on June 5, 1932 in Fillmore, Oklahoma. She married Coy Smith on June 5, 1954 in Durant, Oklahoma. Mary along with Coy moved to Clayton in August of 1958, and they began their teaching career and made Clayton their home. Over Mary's 32 years of teaching, she had the privilege of touching many students' lives and she cared about each one of them. Mary was a general business, typing, and accounting teacher, and when computers came about, she went back to school to learn this new technology and always said you weren't't too old to learn something new. Mary loved to sew and would often whip up a new outfit for school the night before. She loved arts and crafts and spent her free time oil painting, doing various crafts, quilting, and attending bluegrass festivals with her husband Coy. Mary loved to go to the Robber's Cave Fall Festival in Wilburton where she had a booth with some of her projects. She would often take photos each year and come back home and paint a portrait of those beautiful mountains she loved so much. Mary was a member of the Piddlin' Piecemakers Quilting Club which met weekly. Mary was a member of the Clayton Lions Club, Homecoming Committee, Little Dixie Board, Pushmataha Retired Educators, The Green Thumb Program, and Clayton Genealogy. She loved to participate in anything that would make a positive impact on the community she loved so much. Mary worked tirelessly along with many others to make the annual homecoming an event to enjoy each year and loved getting to see friends and former students. After retirement, she dedicated a lot of her time to help get the Cartwright Memorial Library up and going and was a member of the Cartwright Memorial Library Board. This was such a passion of hers and she served on the board and worked there weekly. She was a lover of books, and this just suited her to a T. Mary is survived by her daughter Kristy Cox and husband Gary, granddaughter Carli Cox of Fillmore, Oklahoma. Special cousin Dortha Jean Rounsaville of Coleman, Oklahoma. Brother-in-law Acie Smith and wife Phyllis and niece Lacie Smith and great nephew Liam of Milburn, Oklahoma. She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Coy Smith, parents Buster and Lucille Chaney and sister Vernice Woods and husband Lanham Woods. Pallbearers will be John Long, Cody Nail, Donnie Corbin, Vaughn Pugh, Joe Little, and Rodney Lovitt. Visitation will be on Monday, July 17th from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at McCarn Funeral Chapel in Clayton. Services will be on Tuesday, July 18th, 2023 at 10:00AM at Clayton First Baptist Church in Clayton, Oklahoma with Bro. Chris Dennis and John Long officiating. Interment will be at Milburn Cemetery at 2:00PM. Services have been entrusted to McCarn Funeral Service.
