Gregory Icasiano Barrs

Greg Barrs, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted educator, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026 at the age of 62, surrounded by those who loved him. He and Mary met in college, two young hearts beginning a story that grew into a lifetime of love. Family meant everything to Greg. He was a steady and dependable partner to Mary, and a proud, loving father to their twins, Nicholas and Alexander, their son Jacob, their daughter Rachel, and later his daughters and son in law: Caroline, Taylor, and Jimmy, who he treated as his own children. His warmth extended to his grandson, Hudson Gregory, who brought him immense pride. He also had a great, sprawling family of origin. As the 10th of 13 siblings, Greg possessed a rare gift: even in a family so large, he had a way of making every person feel seen, important, and deeply treasured. For 24 years, Greg dedicated his life to teaching grade school. Smart, creative, and joyful, he saw the promise in every child. He did far more than educate; his quiet investment in his students shaped their confidence, reminded them they mattered, and made a lasting difference in their lives. A reserved man with a gentle sense of humor, Greg was a true handyman who loved working with his hands and could fix just about anything. He was the person others relied on-a steady presence who made life brighter simply by being there. Above all, Greg lived his Catholic faith quietly, consistently, and deeply. As his body grew weaker, his trust in the Lord only grew stronger. When strength left his hands, he held more tightly to God, knowing the One who was leading him home. He has now met his Savior face-to- face-free from weakness, suffering, and weary days, and welcomed into perfect health, unending peace, and eternal joy. Greg will be terribly missed by Mary, his children, his grandson, his brothers and sisters, his students, and every life made better because he was here. Yet his family holds fast to the promise that this is not goodbye forever. Services will be on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 3:00 PM at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Talihina with Father Bryan Ketterer officiating. Internment will be on Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Resurrection Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to McCarn Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Greg's memory to St. Gregory's Abbey in Shawnee, Oklahoma, or Subiaco Academy in Arkansas.
